Research:

I have a broad research interest in the evolution of the Earth-life system in deep geological time, particularly during the origin and diversification of unicellular eukaryotes and multicellular eukaryotic algae (Rhodophyta, Chlorophyta) in the late Palaeoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic period. The materials are from Shennongjia region in South China and Jiao-Liao-Xu-Huai region in North China.

The methods include chemical dissolution and thin section to obtain organic walled-microfossil assemblages preserved in low-grade metamorphic fine-grained siliciclastic sedimentary rocks. Ultrastructural structure were observed by using transmitted light microscope (TLM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman spectra and FTIR techniques, and so on. These studies shed light not only the important evolutionary events, but also the macro-evolutionary processes of the biosphere, and relationship between surface environmental changes and geobiological consequences during the critical transitions in Earth history.
